Dear colleagues,
We are living through a health crisis that has no parallel in recent times, conditioning our most fundamental ways of living and working, and in which the interaction with each other is facing dramatic changes. This very event, Jornadas CICECO, a happy occasion where we all usually (physically) meet to discuss science and a sort of daily life subjects, was also affected. So, it is with a mixture of joy and “saudade” that we invite you to attend and participate in the 2020 Edition of Jornadas CICECO on the 19-20th November 2020, this year as an online meeting.
The topic we elected,
"THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE AND CICECO: what have we learned from the pandemic?",
reflects the changes we were and will be forced to face on our ways of doing science, on what science we should be doing, on applying for funding and priority R&D lines, and on what we need to do to improve our publishing and communication skills.
We have put together an eclectic program that covers the views of different stakeholders on some of today’s most important topics of science, focused in the future. Our invited speakers include members of CICECO’s Advisory Board that will bring the weight of their experience and will share their thoughts on this year’s Jornadas’ topic. The president of FCT gave us the honour to be present and will provide a glimpse of the future trends of research priorities and funding of science. A presentation on the way we access data and communicate science in conventional, or less so, scientific platforms, will be balanced by a talk on public engagement by combining Science and Art. As a closure talk, a renowned Portuguese scientist will enlighten us on social expectations regarding Science and the scientists, a fact that is nowadays a hot topic with the urgent need of finding a vaccine or effective therapeutics.
We aim to bring together CICECO researchers and invited speakers to discuss these relevant topics and also to present the science our members are making in all research topics. This is a great opportunity to foster the collaboration between CICECO researchers, to present our vision and mission to the University community, and to give a chance for young researchers to show their ambition and creativity. Accordingly, the 2020 Edition of Jornadas CICECO includes the participation of PhD students with video-based presentations and there will be a special students-only program organized by the PhD students’ council on the morning of the second day of Jornadas.
All of you are challenged to share your research work by submitting a (graphical) abstract. This year, the poster presentation will be done in a paper-free way, using the twitter platform, aiming strong and fruitful interactions. Of course, there will be prizes for the best posters, that will have the opportunity to proceed to flash oral presentations, and to the PhD students’ video-based presentations. This year we will have a photo contest on two categories for you to show your artistry with a camera, and that will also have their prizes!
We are counting on you to make the first (and hopefully last) online Jornadas a memorable event.

Jornadas CICECO 2020 Organizing Committee
The event will take place virtually on Zoom platform, and it is open to all the scientific community and society at no charge.
The poster session will be paper-free, according to the following steps:
• Submit a Graphical Abstract on the topic you choose (more details on the abstract submission form given below).
• Tweet your poster with the title and using #JornadasCICECOPoster hashtag. Download detailed instructions here.
• Engage with your peers, answering questions and commenting other posters.
• A committee will select the 10 best posters that will have the opportunity to do a flash presentation.
Prizes will be awarded to the best presentations and poster with the largest interaction on tweeter.
A photo contest is open, according to the indications and categories described below:
• Send photos of your daily life at CICECO (dailylife@CICECO).
• Send photos/images of your scientific work (science@CICECO).
Prizes will be awarded to the best photo in each category and to the photo selected by Jornadas participants.
A PhD student video contest is open to all PhD students of CICECO. Prepare a 5-minute-long video about the goals, work and challenges faced so far on your PhD to be presented during Jornadas CICECO 2020. The name of the session is “The Tale of My PhD” and the duration is the only rule we impose. All the rest is up to you and your imagination!
Participants will be able to vote in the following categories:
• PhD student video.
• Flash oral presentation.
• Photo.

Helena Pereira is President of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
She occupied several positions related to academic and scientific administration and coordination in entities pertaining to Universities, Polytechnic Institutes and Research Institutions.
She was Dean and Vice-chancellor of the Technical University of Lisbon. From 2008 to 2010, she also presided over the AMONET Association (the Portuguese Association of Female Scientists).
She has a degree in Industrial Chemical Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico, a doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) awarded by the Faculty of Biology from the University of Hamburg, Germany and an aggregation degree by the Instituto Superior de Agronomia.
Her field of research has been forestry and forest-based products, including bioenergy and biorefineries.
Mónica Bettencourt-Dias is a Group Leader at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia (IGC, Portugal) since 2006, where she studies centriole and cilia biogenesis, homeostasis, evolution and dysregulation using a variety of approaches, model organisms and patient samples. She did her PhD with Jeremy Brockes (UCL, UK), postdoctoral research with David Glover (University of Cambridge (UK)) and a 2-year diploma course on science communication at the Birkbeck College (UK). She is a member of EMBO YIP and EMBO, having been awarded the European Eppendorf Award for young investigators, two Pfizer prizes, an ERC starting and ERC consolidator grants. Since 2018 she is the director of IGC.
Leanne Mullen completed her PhD in Materials Science from the University of Cambridge in 2010 and moved to publishing in 2012. She has worked in various disciplines including applied mathematics, materials science, physics, chemistry and engineering. Currently Leanne Mullen is an Executive Publisher at Elsevier managing a portfolio of 16 journals and the annual Tetrahedron Symposium. She has launched 2 open access journals: Materials Today Bio and Giant.
In times of “publish or perish”, it’s also worth noting that between 30 and 50% of all research papers submitted to journals end up in the “desk reject” pile – where for a number of different reasons, ranging from being outside of the scope of a journal to language inadequacies, papers never even make it to the peer review stage. To address this, we give talks in different institutes and conferences around the world to support researchers to get published.
Kostas Nikolopoulos is a particle physicist who was strongly involved in the Higgs boson discovery and now tries to complete our understanding of mass generation for matter. He is also interested in inspiring the new generations of scientists and citizens. Recently he was the winner of the first ERC Public Engagement on the category Public outreach.
João Lourenço Monteiro is a biologist with specialization in Developmental Biology and History of Sciences. His dedication to science communication aims to make scientific knowledge accessible to a greater number of people. In this sense, COMCEPT, from which João Lourenço Monteiro is co-founder, was created. COMCEPT, Comunidade Céptica Portuguesa (English: Portuguese Skeptical Community), is a Portuguese project dedicated to scientific skepticism, created to promote rational and critical thinking. He is author of the 1st COMCEPT book “Não se deixe enganar”, which is focused on contribute to the informed and enlightened debate on current issues by the Portuguese society.
Lídia Pereira is a Portuguese politician of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) who has been serving as a Member of the European Parliament since 2019. She is also president of the Youth of the European People's Party (YEPP), that represents over 1 million youngsters all across Europe.
Born in 1991 and raised in Coimbra. Lídia Pereira graduated in Economics at the University of Coimbra and holds a Master’s degree in European Economic Studies from the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium). She worked as a consultant in the financial sector. Since 2018, she serves as President of the Youth of the European People’s Party (YEPP). She was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 2019. She is a Member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and a Substitute Member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. She is a Member of the Delegation for relations with the People’s Republic of China and the Delegation for relations with the United States.
Manuel has a MSc. in Mechanical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon), specializing in Industrial Production and in 2019 did a specialization in Negotiation by Catolica Lisbon School of Business and Economics.
Manuel is the co-founder of SNAP! Partners, a boutique consultancy company based in Lisbon specialized in Horizon 2020 research and innovation grants for Start-ups and SMEs, having raised over 14M€ for Portuguese organizations. He is also a co-founder and the COO of GoParity – Sustainable investing, the only Portuguese impact crowdlending platform.
He was a technical assistant in the European Parliament and in the Portuguese Parliament on matters of energy policy, electric mobility and innovation. He then worked as an energy auditor in the residential and healthcare sectors in Portugal.
Since 2011 he has been involved in the development and management of more than 21 FP7 and H2020 projects. His project expertise focuses on the EIC Accelerator (former SME Instrument), Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy Production, Smart Cities and Pre-Commercial Procurement of Innovation, to mention a few. He has extensive experience in coordination of consortia, financial and project reporting and project management, dissemination and exploitation of project results and go-to-market, as well as policy recommendations and large event management (such as international conferences).
Clément Sanchez is Professor at Collège de France, holding the Chair of Chemistry of Hybrid Materials. He was Director of The “Laboratoire de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Paris” (UPMC‐Collège de France‐CNRS) (1999‐2013). He did a large part of his career as CNRS Director of Research and Professor at Ecole Polytechnique. He is currently performing research at the Collège de France in Paris. He was the recipient of national and international awards and is member of several Academies of Sciences. He is specialized in nanochemistry of nanostructured transition metal oxide based gels and hybrid materials. He studies the properties of hybrids and inorganic nanomaterials looking for applications in the domains of energy, environment biomaterials and health.
Ravi Silva is the Director of the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) and heads the Nano-Electronics Centre (NEC), which is an interdisciplinary research centre. The ATI has over 150 active researchers working on multidiscipline programmes with the NEC being a major research group within the institute. He joined Surrey in 1995. Ravi's secondary education was in Sri Lanka, after which he joined the Engineering Department at Cambridge University for his undergraduate and postgraduate work. He was a recipient of Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Fellowship while at Cambridge and member of Clare College.
Matthew Rosseinsky has made influential discoveries in the field of materials chemistry, particularly in the synthetic chemistry of solid state electronic materials and novel microporous structures, which have applications ranging from catalysis to superconductivity. He works on the development of new methods of identifying functional materials, emphasising the integration of experiment with computational methods.He has published 390 papers, including 14 and 8 in the multidisciplinary journals Nature and Science, respectively.
João Rocha is Full Professor of Chemistry and Director of the University of Aveiro Institute of Materials (CICECO), the largest Materials Science Institute in Portugal. He is an ‘officer’ of the Chemistry Division of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (Chemistry), and Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and Chemistry Europe. He has received the prize Ferreira da Silva (highest distinction bestowed by the Portuguese Chemical Society), the Madinabeitia-Lourenço award from the Real Sociedad Española de Química, and the prize Franco-Portugais from the French Chemical Society. In 2005, he received the prize for Scientific Excellence from the Portuguese Science Foundation, and in 1990 a prize from Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He has published ca. 500 papers that received ca. 19,000 citations (Scopus).

Federico Bella (Turin, 1987) is an associate professor of Chemistry at Politecnico of Turin and works in the field of hybrid solar cells and secondary batteries, focusing on electrolytes formulation and devices integration. He is author of 80 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (h-index = 49) and he is board member of the Industrial Chemistry Division of Società Chimica Italiana. He is the 2019 recipient of the RSC Environment, Sustainability & Energy Division Early Career Award for the inventive development of photoinduced polymerization strategies for solar cells and batteries.
Dr. Hendrik Huthoff is the Head of Education at the Jena School from Microbial Communication where he is responsible for the training program of doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. During his chemistry studies and his PhD research, he developed a severe anxiety disorder that had a major impact on his life despite finding ways of successfully completing his scientific work. Nowadays, he is active as a mental health advocate to improve provisions at institutes of higher education and to highlight that mental health problems can be solved with the right kind of support.
